Who We Are

The Centro Sport Terapia Judo Ravenna was established in Ravenna in 1982, and started as a FIJLKAM affiliate society under the name of Polisportiva Judo Ravenna. In April 1983 it was affiliated to the F.I.S.D. “Federazione Italiana Sport Disabili” and started working with the disabled, due to a notable increase in their numbers the Polisportiva consist of 2 divisions for administrative reasons. This concerns only the administrative side, collaboration and integration between the 2 societies has not changed. This division led to the start of “Centro Sport Terapia Judo Ravenna”  and “Società Judo Ravenna”.

We aim to develop people’s motorial abilities and encourage the disabled to practice sports. We work in the

"martial arts hall", situated on the second floor of the sports center "A. Costa", Ravenna. Because of the presence of architectonic barriers we can only work with mentally disabled people. We offer: phisiotherapic gym, athletics, judo, swimming, artistic gymnastics. We have around 45-50 athletes who attend our courses, we have twelve instructors, six of them with the ISEF diploma and/or on the Federazione Italiana Sport Disabili register as qualified instructors.

Our courses take place in the afternoon 3 times per week and last for one hour, the gym is open from October to the end of May, these are:

-          Seven regular courses, two Judo courses and five physiotherapic gym courses, for each course there are 3 or 4 instructors.

-          Two “preliminary” courses, with only one or two people, for beginners who need a special period of observation or an exclusive relationship with the instructor, before their inclusion in a group.

The two swimming courses take place at Ravenna’s public swimming

pool twice a week, there are 5 or 6 swimmers followed by 3 instructors.

We also work with the Residential Center for disabled people located in Via Mattei, where, every morning, 2 of our instructors go and help the guests practice some motorial activities. Besides the center’s guests there are other users who take part in the activities, they come from other centers thanks to an agreement with Ravenna’s social services association.

We think it’s important to highlight the fact that the aim of our courses for mentally disabled people is not only about motorial training, but aim to develop motorial abilities within the wider psychological and social skills development context.

Our instructors, thanks to active training techniques, help to interiorize movement and to encourage harmonious growth and the potential each individual has to attain a certain degree of autonomy. These factors can often considerably improve social and learning skills.

The Handicap typologies and the  ages are quite diverse. Levels of handicap vary and ages range from 11/12 through to adults over 30...

The pupils love to come to the gym because they have fun, it is the place where they feel they can bring themselves out and where they can make real friends.

For us it is very  satisfying to notice that, maybe also thanks to our pupils’, instructors’ and volunteers’ hard work, in our society there is the growing idea of sport, being necessary for all young people notwithstanding eventual personal limitations. And there is a new image of the disabled, finally welcomed to the joys of play and movement.
